Today's review is about a Cdrama I recently finished watching. The drama is called Whispers Of Fate, also known as The Dragon Chant. It stars Luo Yun Xi, Xiao Shun Yao, Alen Fang, Bao Shang En, Ao Zi Yi, Sebrina Chen, Jelly Lin. Without wasting time, let's get straight into the review.
First Impressions
I've been waiting for this drama ever since they announced that filming had began. I had high expectations for it because it has Luo Yinxi as the lead. His dramas barely disappoints.
I have to say that the first five episodes were impressive which is one of the reason why I managed to finish the entire drama. I loved how they introduced the characters to the viewers. The storyline was easy to follow but it was sometimes slow paced.
Storyline
Whispers of Fate isn't a romance drama which is a plus for me. I'm always watching romance dramas, I needed something new. So if you're going to watch just for romance, you'll be disappointed. But romance doesn't determine how good the storyline is.
So the storyline started off simple, easy to follow, less complicated. I had the curiosity of Tang Lici's real identity since people were saying he's Yique Yinyang. And also the truth behind the death of Fang Zhou.
There was a lot of political influence in the drama but more focus was placed on the martial world. Which is something I appreciated, sometimes political influence ruins a good story.
Acting & Characters
I have nothing to complain about when it comes to the acting part. I have nothing but praise for the entire cast. I would say my favourite character is Ghost Peony. He's so entertaining, his dialogues are somehow hilarious. I liked how he was always trying to understand emotions and feel what humans feel. He also had a cat and wondered how it would make him feel.
His curiosity, movements, speech, mindset sold me. I also loved how he was switching personalities as he switched masked.
I feel like Luo Yunxi is playing the same character as the one in Till The End Of The Moon. If we watch Till The End Of The Moon and Whispers Of Fate, you'll barely see any difference between the two characters played by Luo Yunxi. I have began to noticed this pattern with other popular actors, you can already guess the kind of characters they'll play. I'm not hating on Luo Yunxi, I'm a fan but I feel like I'm seeing the same person in each drama.
Cinematography, Costumes & Music
I'm impressed by the production quality. I was watching this drama on TV and I could see everything clearly.
I have to complain about the fight choreography, I wanted to say this on the first impressions part. So I'm here watching the drama and all of a sudden I see people using music instruments as weapons. What's worse is they can stretch the strings of the instruments as far as they can. It was like a battle of instruments with less physical attacks.
While on the fighting part, they have overused the GCI and the power scaling. As they fight, you see these bright lights with explosives. Then you see them making huge waves of water that are so high and you wonder where does that water come from.
When it comes to music (OSTs), I'm a little disappointed. I don't have any song to call my favourite song from the drama. I don't even think I'll be able to recognise the OSTs if someone plays them unless if it's the opening song. That's the only one I could recognise because of the high pitch part.
Whispers of Fate Ending
Whispers of Fate has a happy and sad ending, depending on how you take it. I'm not going to reveal a lot about what happened. Firstly, I was confused by the final episode, the showdown between Tang Lici and Yique Yinyang. I don't understand the entire scene. Maybe it's because I watching an episode translated by Mango TV.
Conclusion on Whispers of Fate Review
This drama was a bit different from what we usually get, it had little to no romance. The story was good and I loved the acting. It's just that at some point, they were moving slow and beating around the bush. The ending was disappointing. I'd rate it 6.5/10.
